Rio Genil is very popular with kayakers. Although you are only 50 km away from the coast in a southerly direction, this river flows completely differently. The foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the famous coastal mountains to the south of Spain, are creating a block here. The Genil finds its way to the west and flows into the much more famous Guadalquivir near Palma del Rio. That is about 120 km from here, but more than 200 km along the river. The water then takes at least another 200 km to flow into the Mediterranean via Seville near Cadiz and Jerez de la Frontera. In hydrography, the most efficient route is certainly not a straight line.
