The escape from Fort San Cristóbal is an event that occurred on May 22, 1938, in Navarra, in the context of the Spanish Civil War, and in the world history of escapes, it is one of the most prominent, both for the number of escapees and for its consequences.[citation needed]
The fort was never used for defensive purposes due to the advent of aviation, which rendered this type of structure obsolete. However, it was used as a military prison from 1934 to 1945, a purpose for which it was not conceived, and the construction of separating walls between the prison facilities and those of the guards was required, which were demolished in the early 21st century.
