Due to its geographical features, Ronda has always been a strategic enclave, reaching its most extensive walls during the period of Moorish rule. The boundaries of the Islamic medina were the Guadalevín Gorge to the north and the city walls to the south, east and west.
The Eastern city walls - Murallas de Levante - are the most important of the city walls; they lie in the eastern sector and consist of a double line of defence: the eastern or Cijara walls and, further out, the First Line of Defence. They housed the suburbs, where the Arab baths were located. At the northern end, the gate of Cijara stands out.
Of the elements that make up the walls of Ronda, the wall and the Cijara gate are among the best preserved. However, the condition of the first line of defense is significantly worse.
