Description

The Plaza Arenal is the city's main square . It was the scene of duels and battles , hence the name (arenarium, "place of battles").

Its role as the city's main square was enhanced by the commercial importance given to adjacent streets, especially Calle Larga .

Here is the monument to Miguel Primo de Rivera on horseback, the work of Mariano Benlliure. It has trees and decorative walking paths. There are also many terraces .

The Plaza del Arenal originally emerged as land on the edge of the walled city , on the site where Muslim burials used to take place.
