The Palacio de la Merced, the former Merced Calzada Monastery , is the seat of the Provincial Council of Córdoba.
The monastery was built between 1245 and 1262 and was dedicated to Santa María de la Merced.
Christopher Columbus lived in the old monastery during the years he lived in Córdoba and waited to meet with the Catholic Monarchs.
The current building is a work of the eighteenth century. The exterior is thus formed by a beautifully composed large rectangle in which the horizontality of the facade is broken by the verticality of the church.
This institution preserves a series of artistic works from different periods. The oldest usually come from the monastery , others have come as evidence of scholarships for retired artists paid by the company
