This monument honors the famous Granadan, who in his youth was a companion of the famous Velázquez, from whom he learned the difficult art of sculpting .
Alonso Cano (February 19, 1601 – September 3, 1667) was a Spanish painter, sculptor and architect of the Andalusian school. His style of painting became a strongly luminous style . With its sculptural and elongated figures , the appearance of his paintings became elegant.
It was he who completed the decoration of the main chapel of the cathedral and was its chief tutor for a short time until his death. Among his many works , the polychrome statue of the Virgin Mary in the Cathedral stands out . All his works, both sculptures and paintings, are numerous and famous and can be found in churches and museums in Seville.
