Known as the Triunfo de San Francisco Javier de Cádiz , the monument is located in the historic center of this city.
The monument's Ionic column supports the statue of the saint after repairing the mutilations he suffered during his displacement from one place to another. It is made entirely of white marble. At the base is the coat of arms of Cadiz on either side and identical inscriptions on the flanks:
THIS COLUMN WAS ERECTED BY UOTO FROM THAT CITY OF CADIZ AND WAS AT SN FRAN.CO XAUIER APOSTOL OF INDIA AS VNO OF SVS PATRONOS. YEAR 1735. JHS.
By agreement of February 25, 1706, the municipality of Cádiz agreed to appoint the Apostle of India and Prince of the Sea as the city's co-patron .
This saint was one of the scholars most supportive of the founder of the Society of Jesus, Saint Ignatius of Loyola. He devoted himself to the conversion of unbelievers, and his preaching and ministry in Goa, Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka), China and Japan are particularly notable.
The monument to Sant Francesc Xavier was first erected in 1735 on the old Porta del Mar. It subsequently collapsed and was given to the Museum of Fine Arts for safekeeping, which returned it to the City Hall in July 1914 as it had no archaeological value. In 1921 it was given to the bishop to be placed in the courtyard of the seminary, the former residence of the Jesuits. He stayed there for about 15 years.
On December 6, 1943 , it was at the intersection of Plaça d'Argüelles and Albereda Apodaca.
