The monument to the Order of Mercenaries is located in Plaça de la Mercè .
Plaça de la Mercè was an esplanade outside the wall between the wall and the Mercedarios Monastery , built after the city was reconquered in the 13th century.
The Convent of the Mercedaris became a municipal hospital after the confiscation of Mendizábal, and the convent's church was opened for worship. It later became the Basilica of La Mercè , housing the city's patron saint and the mausoleum housing the remains of General Miguel Primo de Rivera .
On the opposite side of the square from the basilica is Carrer Muro , home to part of Jerez's Islamic wall , most of which still survives in the city.
