The Hermitage of La Concepción is a 17th century foundation , located in the Plaza de Abades.
It was built to house the image of a virgin found in a wall of Santa Clara. However, this required a lawsuit against the sisters of the convent of Santa Clara, who claimed the statue because it had been found in one of their walls. After the lawsuit was settled in Giménez's favor, the Virgin was transferred from the cathedral to her new location in a procession on April 9, 1682. However , the construction of the chapel dates from 1750 . It was closed in the 19th century.
The most striking feature of this small hermitage is its facade. This consists of a semi-circular arch with a keystone, accented by a corbel, framed by a lintel surmounted by a split pediment surmounted by an oculus. A small bell tower crowns the whole. The facade is decorated with paintings imitating marble, in different colours. During a restoration in the early 21st century, the original colors, which had been hidden for a long time, were recovered.
Legends:
Apparition of the Virgin
The statue was found by Diego de la Rocha. This mason was working in the convent of Santa Clara when he saw a light shining through a wall . Pulling down the partition, he discovered a statue of a virgin in a bow, with two lanterns beside her, which were immediately extinguished.
miraculous healings
The statue was forgotten and without light when the procession of the Blessed Sacrament passed by, the lantern spontaneously lit up and spilled so much oil that the people began to collect it in jars. Given the miraculous nature of the event, the oil was given to the sick , who, according to tradition , were cured of their ailments.
