Description

Lázaro Cárdenas was born into a very humble indigenous family in Mexico and received little academic training.

At age 19, he joined the Mexican Revolution . From then on he rose rapidly in the military hierarchy . Within 10 years he would become brigadier general. At that time he turned to politics. He started as governor of a region in Mexico. There he used his political skills in a socially oriented way: land distribution and the establishment of schools, among other things.

At the age of 39 he became Minister of the Interior and at the age of 41 he became the Minister of War. At the age of 43, he became president of Mexico and remained so for 6 years. Plutarco Elias Calles had always been his patron and it was thanks to him that he achieved that position, but when he arrived he distanced himself so much from him that Calles eventually went into exile in the US Cardenas's policy was directed at the leftist ideas that would make him so famous.

The slogan "Mexico for the Mexicans" perfectly summarizes the lines he followed during his mandate: nationalization of oil , which earned him a deep enmity with American politics, the fight against the big landowners , nationalization of the railways and free and compulsory secular public education , among others.

His connection with Cordoba in particular and with Spain in general was his willingness to take in Spanish refugees fleeing Franco's Spain.

On March 18, 2003, on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the nationalization of Mexico's oil companies, the bust was unveiled in Cordoba .

On October 24, 1994, there was an incident. On that day, the bust of Lázaro Cárdenas was unveiled in front of his son, but at the unveiling, his son realized that the figure was not that of his father, but that of another Mexican president.
