Palacio Marqueses de la Algaba - Seville

The Palace of the Marquesses of La Algaba is a historic building in the city of Seville, Andalusia, Spain. It is one of the finest examples of civil Mudejar architecture in the city. It houses the Centro de Arte Mudéjar de Sevilla.

This palace was built in 1474 by order of Juan de Guzmán y Torres, I lord of La Algaba.

In May 1990 it was purchased by the municipality of Seville and restored between 1997 and 2002. It houses the headquarters of the Delegation of Citizen Participation and the Mudejar Center.

The facade is of great importance and consists of two parts: the lower part is made of natural stone and the upper part is decorated with polychrome roof tiles. The interior consists of two floors surrounding a central courtyard with arcades that were supported by marble columns from Genoa, most of which have not survived. On the sides there is a tower with a structure similar to that of the Torre de los Guzmanes in the municipality of La Algaba. The original coffered ceiling in one of the ground floor rooms is particularly notable, with designs formed by vegetal elements and coats of arms, as well as the grandiose main staircase which has been painstakingly reconstructed.

The Centro de Arte Mudéjar is currently exhibiting a collection of 111 pieces related to this artistic style, including Mudejar jars, seals, a baptismal font, 15th century polychrome walking sticks, arrocabe cloths, musquetry, wooden muqarnas pineapples, fragments of plasterwork , tiles and Gothic tombstones.
