A24 08 Urdoz - Pamplona/Iruña

In the eighth stage, we travel through the Pyrenees from France to Spain. It is a short mountain ride of only 71 km, but in that short distance, there are still 1361 meters of elevation gain. We ride in a south-southwest direction and cross the Pyrenees with one gentle pass; a ‘runner’ as the cyclists would say. We cycle from French to Spanish Basque Country.

The start is at the lowest point of the day (Lp 145 m), and after a flat approach of about 15 km, we already feel the false flat upstream along the Nive des Aldudes. From Aldudes (km 17), the real climbing begins. The French section of the pass goes to the Spanish border (km 26) and is called col d’Esnazu.

From the Spanish border, the mountain pass is called collado de Urquiaga. A climb of 13 km with about 3 km of false flat for the legs. After that, there's another steep section. After 32 km of cycling, we reach the highest point of the day: Hp 919 m.

Once on top, there is a long and very gradual descent to our stage destination Pamplona.

Pamplona (Iruñea in Basque) is the capital of the Spanish region of Navarra. The city is located on the ‘Arga’ river and has around 195,000 inhabitants. Navarra is one of the seven provinces of the Basque Country, 4 in Spain and 3 in France. The city is particularly famous for the annual running of the bulls during the San Fermín festival, in honor of San Firmín, who is the patron saint of the city. These festivities take place annually between July 6 and 14.
