GR-225. Stage 01. Fort Alfonso XI (Monte Ezcaba)-Olave/Olabe

The GR-225 route, Stage 01, connects the Alfonso XI Fort on Mount Ezcaba with Olave/Olabe, offering a unique experience for hiking enthusiasts in Navarra. With a length of 13.7 kilometers and an accumulated elevation gain of 276 meters, this route presents a medium level of difficulty, ideal for both experienced hikers and those who wish to enjoy nature without excessive complications. The journey begins at the Alfonso XII Fort, also known as the San Cristóbal Fort, an imposing military fortress built between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Located on Mount San Cristóbal, this building not only offers an interesting historical perspective but also provides panoramic views of the city of Pamplona and its surroundings. The fortress was designed to protect the city and has witnessed numerous events throughout its history. Along the route, hikers can reflect on the Escape from the San Cristóbal Fort, a significant event that took place on May 22, 1938, during the Spanish Civil War. This escape is considered one of the most notable in the history of escapes, both for the number of prisoners who managed to flee and for the repercussions it had in the context of the conflict. The trail meanders through a diverse natural landscape, where walkers can enjoy the native flora and fauna of the region.
