One of the most remarkable churches in northern Champagne, and a unique witness to the birth, development and decline of the County of Rethel, Saint-Nicolas was founded in the 13th century. Built on the site of a priory church, the new church is in the ogival style, with a high nave and two side aisles. After two centuries of struggle, in 1317 the people of Rethélois succeeded in having their uncomfortable aisle demolished and replaced by a nave of the same dimensions as that of the monks, giving the church two large aisles side by side. In 1531, an open portal to the town was built. In 1614, construction began on an enormous tower with 3 superimposed storeys in classical order (Doric, Ionic and Corinthian) to replace the old bell tower. The French Revolution and the two World Wars brought their share of mutilation and damage. Restoration work by the Monuments Historiques began in 1941 and was not completed until 1994.
