The sad legend of the name of the Col du Cheval Mort tells that one Christmas Eve, a long time ago, a man named Baptistou went on horseback from Froidviala to visit his bride in Saint-Amant. He was caught in a snowstorm as he approached the ruined hut at the foot of the pass. He took shelter for a moment against a low stone wall, but in order not to freeze to death he had to open the belly of his horse and take shelter inside to protect himself from the cold.
