Le Col du Cheval Mort est un col du massif de la Margeride qui culmine à 1 454 m d'altitude.
C'est au col du Cheval Mort que débute la petite route goudronnée qui permet l'accès au Truc de Fortunio et au signal de Randon. Les plus hauts sommets de la Margeride avec 1 551m d'altitude.
La triste légende du nom du Col du Cheval Mort raconte que'une veille de Noël, il y a bien longtemps, un dénommé Baptistou était allé à cheval du Froidviala rendre visite à sa promise à Saint-Amant. Il fut prit dans une tempête de neige en approchant de la baraque en ruines au pied du col. Il s’abrita un moment contre un muret de pierre mais pour ne par mourir de froid il dut ouvrir le ventre de son cheval et s'abriter à l'intérieur pour se protéger du froid.
