Musée Antoine Vivenel

The Compiègne Museum of Art and Archaeology was born of the generosity of local patron Antoine Vivenel (Compiègne, 1799 ? Paris, 1862), after whom it is named. Between 1825 and 1848, this highly cultured entrepreneur-architect, who made his fortune but ended his life ruined, amassed an important collection of objets d?art.

As early as 1839, Antoine Vivenel wanted to create a Musée des Études in his home town, a veritable "encyclopedic compendium of all the arts from all periods", which he combined with an educational aim and the provision of free drawing lessons. He then donated his entire collection to Compiègne, nearly 4,000 items ranging from prehistory to the mid-19th century.

In 2019 and 2020, two new areas of the museum were inaugurated: one dedicated to Asia and the other to paleontology.

In 2023, a historical immersion site was added to the itinerary, with the use of new technologies.

A one-way ticket gives access to the Antoine Vivenel Museum, the Musée de la Figurine historique and the Antoine Vivenel Exhibition Center for 24 hours. Admission to the Musée du Cloître Saint-Corneille is free.
