The Col du Tourmalet is a mountain pass located in the Hautes-Pyrénées in the southwest of France.
The 2114 meter high passage became especially known thanks to the Tour de France, where it was included for the first time in 1910. No other mountain has been climbed as often since then as the Tourmalet. Near the top of the climb, there is a monument in memory of former Tour director Jacques Goddet.
The Tourmalet is the highest mountain pass in the Barèges-La Mongie ski area, the largest ski area in the French Pyrenees. On the east side lies La Mongie, a winter sports village developed by real estate developers at the foot of the slopes. On the west side lies the more traditional village of Barèges, from where skiing is done in winter and hiking in summer.
The Col du Tourmalet is located in the Pyrenees. From Luz Saint Sauveur, the Col du Tourmalet is 19 km long. Over this distance, you climb 1404 meters in elevation. The average gradient of the climb is therefore 7.4%.
