The Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Cathedral (Notre-Dame) of Saint-Omer began as a modest chapel in the 7th century. Later it became a collegiate church and finally in 1561 one of the well-known cathedrals in Flanders and Artois, after the destruction of Terwaan, the only French enclave in Artois by Charles V. Since the dissolution of the Diocese of Saint-Omer in 1801, the cathedral has no longer been a bishopric. Saint-Omer has since been under the Diocese of Arras. The church houses a descent from the cross by Rubens and there is also a memorial monument to Saint Audomarus or Omer.
