Blois is situated at a strategic point between two hills on the right bank of the Loire. The numerous steep and winding streets, which in some places are connected by stairs, and the harmonious, old buildings make visitors feel as if they are in the Middle Ages. From the quays, especially at sunset, there are stunning views of the Loire and the Pont J. Gabriel. Furthermore, the Saint-Louis Cathedral, the Saint-Nicolas Church, and the Notre-Dame de la Trinité Basilica are certainly worth a visit.
In Blois, the Château de Blois is a good example of a Renaissance castle. Francis I transformed the castle in the early 16th century into a masterpiece of French Renaissance art, by adding a wing that contains the world-famous open spiral staircase and the "facade with the loggias." The castle suffered severe damage during World War II but has been fully restored and now houses several museums such as the 'Musée des Beaux-Arts.' On summer evenings, a 'sound and light show' depicts the history of the castle.
