The Collet du Linge, less commonly referred to as Col du Linge, is a 987-meter high French pass in the Vosges in the Haut-Rhin department.
During World War I, the Collet du Linge was on the front line that separated German and French troops in the Vosges. From July 20 to October 15, 1915, the pass was the scene of bloody and costly battles. French mountain troops attempted unsuccessfully to storm the heights, which were heavily fortified by German forces with bunkers and barbed wire, accessed by the Drei Ähren – Uhlhorst funicular and defended by Bavarian landwehr regiments with artillery and machine guns. After a final counterattack by German troops, the front froze, and the focus of the fighting shifted to Hartmannswillerkopf. By the end of the war, there were only artillery duels and storm troop skirmishes at Collet du Linge. The conflicts in this front section resulted in a total of 17,000 dead.
