The Templars built a vast economic network. Their fleet was part of it, with its home port in La Rochelle, France.
Through their international connections, they constituted an important channel of wisdom and knowledge between the Muslim world and the Christian European world. They also made contributions to the techniques of surveying, cartography, and navigation. Their fleet was the first in Europe to use the magnetic compass.
In addition, they developed an international banking network. It was a way to make payments and withdraw money from their banking system at branches located in different places, through a complex coding known only to Templar banks.
