Châlons-en-Champagne is a city and municipality in France. The city is the prefecture of the department of Marne and also the capital of the Champagne-Ardenne region. The population in 1999 was 47,339. Before 1998, the city was named Châlons-sur-Marne.
Châlons is located southeast of Reims.
Châlons was called Catalaunum in Roman times.
Historians situate the Battle of the Catalaunian Fields of 451 near Châlons. In this battle, the Huns led by Attila were defeated. However, it has not yet been archaeologically proven that the battle actually took place here.
In 1998, the name of the city was changed to Châlons-en-Champagne, the name the city also had before the French Revolution.
