Description

Fort de Douaumont is the most powerful structure in the Verdun stronghold. Taken by surprise 4 days after the start of the Battle of Verdun, it was occupied for 8 months by the German army, which used it as a shelter for its troops and as an essential base for pursuing its offensive. Despite several attempts at reconquest, the fort was not retaken until October 24, 1916.
Period films and photographs, archive documents, commentary and personal accounts enable visitors to gain a better understanding of the history of this important site, with the help of a multimedia guide.
Discover: a barrack room, the 155 turret, the German necropolis where over 600 German soldiers are buried?

Allow 45 minutes to 1 hour for your visit.
The temperature in the fort is low, so bring warm clothing and appropriate footwear.

Ticket sales close 40 minutes before site closing time.
Reservations strongly recommended for groups.
