Narbonne is beautifully described by Stefan Hertmans in his novel The Convert: 'I had never imagined Narbonne; perhaps that's why the city surprises and charms me so much. A serene place ten kilometers from the sea, bathed in Mediterranean light, once founded by the Romans, crisscrossed by urban waters, with leafy lanes and alleys, patrician houses and spacious courtyards. Yellow stone, blue sky. The intensity that a northern person feels with southern colors.'
