Scherwiller

Situated on the Alsace Wine Route about 6km from Sélestat, Scherwiller, capital of Riesling, stands proudly in the heart of the Piedmont region.

Renowned for its wines, particularly Riesling, Scherwiller boasts 370 hectares of vineyards, making it one of the top three villages in the Bas-Rhin department in terms of surface area under vines.

The village is crossed by the Aubach, a river dotted with around a hundred wash-houses. This site, listed since December 4, 1969, is well worth a visit to immerse yourself in history. Stroll along the quays, cross the little stone bridges and stop to discover the remains of the old wash-houses where the washerwomen came to wash their clothes. In summer, these laundries are brought back to life in the Rue des Lavandières theater show, where scenes from rural village life are performed in French and Alsatian.

Along the Aubach, admire the typical half-timbered houses dating from the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The colorful houses are generally timber-framed on the upper floors, with ashlar on the first floor. A blend of tradition and modernity that will amaze you.

Take a break in the medieval communal garden, where you'll be immersed in explanations and poems about courtly love.

On the heights of the commune, take a walk on the rocky spur where the 13th-century Château de l'Ortenbourg stands. The view over the commune, the Alsace plain, the Swiss Alps and the spire of Strasbourg Cathedral is impressive.
