Le Puy-en-Velay

Le Puy-en-Velay is one of the most interesting places on the central France route. Le Puy is definitely worth a day visit. The medieval center (the Holy City) has been a pilgrimage site since 962. Many pilgrims from Germany and eastern France gathered here before they started the harsh trip to Santiago. In the Cathedral of Notre Damme the pilgrims can receive the blessing for their journey. The city lies in a volcanic crater. Very characteristic is the chapel of St. Michel d'Aiguilhe, built on a steep lava rock and the colossal statue of Mary, cast from the iron of 213 captured canons, on top of a basalt hill. Le Puy is famous for its green lentils (lent vertes) and lace (dentelles), which are for sale in many places in the city. The campsite is within walking distance. The trail is also part of a pilgrimage route GR65.
