Urmatt is a French municipality with 1,457 inhabitants in the valley of Breusch in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region. In the time of the Merovingians, the place was called "Casa Rumaldi".
According to the Alsatian historian Grandidier, the name Urmatt derives from the word source. In his interpretation, a perfect place to hunt aurochs in ditches on wet marshy ground. Another historian, Schoepflin, interprets "UR" as "old" and "MAT" as "meadow," thus old meadows. The coat of arms shows a red auroch on a green background.
