Pontoise is located on the right bank of the l'Oise. The city is one of the most important judicial towns in the country as well as the seat of the Catholic diocese, which has been detached from Versailles since 1966. The inhabitants are called Pontoisien(ne)s.
Pontoise has a rich history of more than two thousand years. It was the historic capital of the French Vexin and an important city during the Middle Ages. Pontoise became famous due to the long stay of Impressionist artist Camille Pissarro. Numerous works by this Impressionist are now spread across the largest museums in the world. Thanks to the rich presence of heritage, Pontoise received the label of art and historical city in 2006.
Some sights in Pontoise are the Cathédrale Saint-Maclou, which was built in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Musée Tavet-Delacour, the museum houses sculptures from the Middle Ages, manuscripts from the 17th century, and paintings from the 20th century.
