Bletterans is a French commune with 1,500 inhabitants in the Jura department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Lons-le-Saunier and the Canton of Bletterans. The town is located in the heart of historic Bresse and borders Cosges, Nance, Villevieux, Fontainebrux, Saillenard, and Frangy-en-Bresse. Since the Middle Ages, it has been part of the Free County of Burgundy. On July 1 or 2, 1519, a great fire destroyed the village. During the Thirty Years' War, the town was captured in 1637 after a prolonged siege by French troops under the Duke of Orléans-Longueville. In 1674, it fell again, this time without a fight, into French hands and became part of France along with the entire Free County of Burgundy in the Treaty of Nijmegen in 1678/1679.
