Niedermodern is a French commune with 877 inhabitants in the Bas-Rhin department in the European territorial collectivity of Alsace and in the Grand Est region.
In the 13th century, the village of Niedermodern was briefly a condominium between the lords of Ochsenstein and the lords of Lichtenberg. The village then belonged to the Lichtenberg domain since the 13th century, but possibly only from 1453 in total. Niedermodern also formed its own Büttelei. A "Büttelei" was a subdivision of an administration. In 1335, a land partition was carried out between the middle and younger lines of the House of Lichtenberg. Niedermodern fell to Ludwig III of Lichtenberg, who founded the younger line of the house. This was the reason for a new internal organization of the Lichtenberg domain: from the offices of Ingweiler and Buchsweiler, among others, the office of Pfaffenhofen was separated and made independent, to which Niedermodern also belonged.
