Situated on the wine route at the foot of the Vosges mountains, between vineyards and wooded hillsides, the commune of Soultzmatt-Wintzfelden benefits from the reputation of its waters and wines. As guardian of the Vallée Noble, named after the many noble families who occupied the area in the 15th century, it harbors the vestiges of this prosperous era.
Soultzmatt is famous for its springs, and the Lisbeth bottling plant opens its doors to visitors curious about its processes. The village takes its name from the presence of a spring with an acidic, salty taste (Sulz: salt, Matte: meadow).
Soultzmatt is also renowned for its Zinnkoepflé grand cru, cultivated by some twenty winegrowing families, and is a must-see on the Alsace wine route.
Vines have been planted here since the 19th century, and the region produces some of the finest ageing wines (gewurztraminer, riesling, pinot gris), which regularly win awards at the world's best wine competitions.
The village also benefits from a warm, arid microclimate, conducive to the development of southern-type flora and fauna. The dry grasslands at the top of the Zinnkoepflé are classified Natura 2000 and are a delight for botanists, who can find rare and sensitive species here. Soultzmatt-Wintzfelden is a Station Verte de Vacances (Green Holiday Resort) and has been awarded a 4th Flower in the national Villes et Villages Fleuris (Towns and Villages in Bloom) competition, and is firmly committed to the development of health tourism through the creation of several hiking trails.
Soultzmatt-Wintzfelden boasts a number of illustrious honorary citizens, including the?namibian ambassador Panduleni Shingenge, film director Francis Perrin, actress Sophie Marceau, comedienne Dinah Faust, singer Julie Pietri, director André Zulawski, two-time Tour de France winner Bernard Thévenet, Count Carlos Coll, cousin of the King of Spain, Geneviève de Fontenay, president of the Miss Nationale committee, and two Alsatian Misses France: Laetitia Bleger, Miss France 2004 and Delphine Wespiser, Miss France 2012.
Halfway between Colmar (24km) and Mulhouse (29km), Soultzmatt-Wintzfelden invites you to discover nature, gastronomy and an authentic heritage.
