Le Croisic was a centre of the salt industry for a long time: in 1557, 1200 salt ships came to the harbour. This harbour was located at the opening of the marhy inland where salt was produced. This salt trade was so important that Le Croisic became the French most important Atlantic port, after Bordeaux. In the year 1452 alone, 4 ships per week of the Hanseatic League alone stopped in Le Croisic to load salt and to transport it to the Baltic Lübeck in Germany.
