The Barrage de Marèges or Marèges Dam is one of the major landmarks in Dam building techniques.
During WWI, it became clear how dependent the French were on coal from abroad for their energy. The Barrage de Marèges was a project to solve a part of that dependency. It was inaugurated in 1935.
To build the dam, they had to make first 2 other dams. One to deviate the river before the current dam, and one to prevent of the deviated water to float back. The two temporary dams allowed to build the dam on a dry spot.
