La Thiérache is a natural region that brings together regions of France and Belgium where we find similar landscape and architectural features: presence of coulisses , grassland, hilly terrain, dispersed habitat, traditional houses built of stone or brick with stone inserts and provided with a slate roof. Located in the northeast of the Aisne department, it flows into the French departments of Nord and Ardennes, but also into the Belgian provinces of Hainaut and Namur. It generally corresponds to the western foothills of the Ardennes massif . The main agglomeration is Fourmies (Nord). La Thiérache is a fragmented region, divided between two countries, three French departments (Nord, Aisne and Ardennes) belonging to two different regions (respectively: Hauts-de-France for Aisne and Nord, Grand Est for Ardennes), and two Belgian provinces (Hainaut and Namur). These boundaries deeply mark this centripetal space. Even the current border between the Aisne and the North, the former border of France before the 17th century, remains an important rupture in social space, despite the striking similarity of the landscapes.
