Chapel of the Black Penitents

The chapel of the Black Penitents is located in Avignon on Rue de la Banasterie. It hosted one of the major brotherhoods of the papal city. The "Gray Penitents" were the first in a long series of Avignon penitents. Then came the "Black Penitents," founded in 1488 by a group of Florentine nobles, the "White Penitents," a brotherhood established in 1527 by thirteen residents of Avignon, the "Blue Penitents," formed in 1557 by a dissidence from the other brotherhoods. Later, at the end of the 16th century, the "Black Penitents of Mercy" came into being. The movement continued with the founding of the "Purple Penitents," and then the "Red Penitents." The Revolution put an end to this flourishing, and today only the "Gray Penitents" and the "Black Penitents" remain in Avignon.
