The chapel of the Black Penitents hosted one of the important orders of the papal city. The "Grey Penitents" were the first in a long line of penitents Avignon. The "Black Penitents" were founded in 1488 by a group of Florentine nobles. The "White Penitents" brotherhood was founded in 1527. The "Penitents Bleus" were formed in 1557 by dissidents from other guilds . At the end of the sixteenth century the "Black Penitents of Mercy" were established. The movement continued with the founding of "Penitents Violets" (1622), then the "Penitents Rouges" (1700). The Revolution put an end to this expansion and today only the "Grey Penitents" remain.
