The 3.5-hectare park opened its doors in 1950 and is home to more than 300 different animals, spread over more than 80 animal species. What is special is that access to the park was free for many years, which has made it one of the biggest tourist attractions in the entire region. Since 2017, however, entrance fees have to be paid for the park. It is also possible to purchase a subscription. Only residents of the city of Lille and some neighboring municipalities can still visit the park for free. In 2000, with 1.4 million visitors, it ranked 9th among France's most popular attractions. Among the "amusement parks" it was in 4th place and had to lead only Disneyland, Futuroscope and Parc Astérix.
