There used to be a post mill on the site of this mill. However, it was destroyed by a hurricane in 1864, after which the current Steenmeulen was built. This served both as an oil mill and for grinding grains for animal feed. Later it was also used as a flour mill. To this end, it owns three pairs of millstones. In addition to wind power, a steam engine was also available.
Since 1938, the mill has been operated by miller Michel Markey, who ran the mill as a flour mill, and Abel Deschodt, who ground grains for animal feed. The production of flour for bread came to an end in 1963, but the animal feed business continued. The mill was well maintained, but in 1980 a blade broke. The mill was restored and was able to run again in 1982. In 1970 the mill was declared a protected townscape and in 1977 a Monument Historique. In 1997 the roof was repaired and not long after the mill came into the hands of Joseph Markey, Michel's son. Together with his wife Véra, the mill was converted into a regional museum, which contains, among other things, working old machines.
