The very particular aspect of the "dry" lawns of Chermizy is both inherited from the old pastures where goats and sheep thrived, but also from the exploitation of the subsoil since the medieval period, in order to extract the limestone. This is what gives the savart its hilly configuration...
Since 1993, this site has been managed by the Conservatoire d'Espaces Naturels des Hauts-de-France, and belongs to the Réserve Naturelle Régionale des Coteaux du Chemin des Dames, because of the richness of its flora (about seven species of orchids) and its fauna (not far from ten rare and protected species have been identified).
Also to be seen not far away is the calcareous grassland of Mont Bossu in Chevregny...
