The engagement of our allies at Fromelles is presented as a diversion to the Battle of the Somme triggered since July 1 by French and British forces. After an artillery preparation started on July 19, 1916 at 11 am, the assault is given at 6 pm on a front of 4 kms. The next day, No Man's Land is covered with dead and wounded. It was during the next 3 days that the allies and especially the Australians tried to rescue as many of their people as possible knocked down by machine gunfire. Peter Corlett's work "Cobbers" erected since July 1998 at the scene of the tragedy testifies to the commitment and dependence of men among themselves.
