In the 15th century, the powerful nobility settled in Uzerche and built hotels, large houses, and castles. Among the buildings from that time are the Château Pontier, the Hôtel des Joyet de Maubec, the Maison Boyer-Chammard, the Maison Eyssartier, the Maison de Tayac, and the Hôtel de Bécharie. The city became the capital of the Bas-Limousin region when a royal court was established in the 16th century. Uzerche experienced its golden age then, with nobles commissioning large houses built with as many turrets as possible, which still define the 'skyline' of Uzerche today.
