Fort Saint-Nicolas is a fort overlooking the Old Port of Marseille. It was built from 1660 to 1664 by the knight de Clerville on the orders of Louis XIV to suppress the spirit of independence of the city of Marseille.
At this location, there was a small chapel founded between 1150 and 1218, dedicated to Saint Nicholas and dependent on the abbey of Saint Victor. At the foot of this chapel, at the narrowest point between Fort Saint-Jean and Fort Saint-Nicolas, the seneschal of Provence ordered in 1322 the construction of a wooden palisade at the end of which was fixed a chain blocking the port passage. This palisade was gradually reinforced to form in 1381 two real bridge piers. At this time, the Saint Nicholas chapel was subjected to significant work with the construction of a walkway and a wall extending to the port chain.
