The amphitheater of Saintes, locally called the arenas of Saintes, is an ancient Roman amphitheater located in Mediolanum Santonum, the capital of the civitas Santonum and the province of Aquitaine Gaul. Its construction probably began under the reign of Emperor Augustus and was completed under Claudius, making it likely one of the earliest buildings of this type constructed in Gaul. The layout of this amphitheater, measuring 126.40 × 101.60 m, makes maximum use of the natural site, a narrow valley against which it is supported, allowing for minimal masonry work. After its abandonment, likely in the first half of the 4th century, its arena gradually filled in, its masonry was repurposed, but it remains visible in the urban landscape.
