Near the garden of the forest house of the Têtes de Chavigny, stands the mausoleum of Captain Joost VAN VOLLENHOVEN. Assigned in 1915 to the Colonial Infantry Regiment of Morocco, he returned to the post of Governor General in Dakar and challenged the policy of recruiting Africans into the army. He resigned and joined his unit on the Front. Wounded by a bullet during the Mangin offensive, he died on July 20 and his body was buried on the edge of the forest of Villers-Cotterêts. His mausoleum was inaugurated in 1938 by Albert LEBRUN and MANDEL, Minister of the Colonies.
