Gap

Gap is a city in southeastern France. It is the capital of the Hautes-Alpes department and has about 39,000 inhabitants. It is located approximately 150 km north of Aix-en-Provence. The city is known for the cheese produced there, the gapençais.


The city was founded by the Gauls. In 14 BC, it was conquered by Emperor Augustus, and under the Romans, it was called Vapincum. In 1512, it was annexed by the French crown. After his return from exile on Elba, Napoleon traveled over the route named after him, Route Napoléon, to Gap.


The capital of the (05) Hautes-Alpes department is called Gap. Gap is a historic town that was founded in 14 BC by the Gauls. In Roman times, it was in the hands of the Romans, from whom influences can still be seen. The city is most famous for the cheese produced there, the gapençais. The ski area, France Ski de Fond, is also popular, with its 50 km of cross-country skiing pistes overlooking the Durance valley.
