The Gravelinas Lighthouse or Petit Fort Philippe Lighthouse, is a lighthouse located in the town of Gravelinas, Nord département, France, in the Petit-Fort-Philippe district of that city. It was in operation from 1843 to 1989. It has been declared a Historical Monument of France. [2]
It was built between 1837 and 1838 but was first lit five years later, in 1843, due to discussions about the usefulness of the lighthouse. It had a catadioptric optic of third-order Fresnel lenses and was fed with vegetable oil. In 1895 the white light that had hitherto emitted was changed to a white and red directional light. During the Second World War it suffered damage that forced to reinforce it with a concrete ring, restoration that was completed in 1949. It was automated in 1979, acquiring then the last feature it had. It was deactivated in 1989. The lighthouse remains open to the public.
