The Grotto of Massabielle is the heart of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in the French town of Lourdes, where, according to tradition, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Bernadette Soubirous on February 11, 1858. The cave attracts about six million pilgrims on an annual basis. It has been carved out of a rock about 27 meters high, called Massabielle vieille roche, or by its original name La Tute aux cochons, after the pigs that have been herded there since time immemorial. The cave is about 9.5 m deep, 9.8 m wide and 3.8 m high and consists of three unequal cavities. In fact, it is a complex of 7 or 8 tributaries of the water coming from the syncline of Batsurguère-Prat d'Aureilh that also feeds the Gave.
