Saint-Nicolas-des-Prés Abbey

The Abbey (Abbaye Saint-Nicolas-des-Prés) is an abbey of Benedictine monks located in Ribemont, in the department of Aisne, France.

The abbey of Saint-Nicolas-des-Prés-sous-Ribemont was founded in 1083 by Anselme II, lord of Ribemont, son of Anselme I, castellan and guidon bearer of the city of Saint-Quentin and Valenciennes, lord of Ostrevant, in the fief of Saint-Nicolas-des-Prés. The monks belonged to the Order of St. Benedict. In 1083, by a charter established in Laon in the presence of Elinand, bishop of Laon, Renauld, archbishop of Reims, Renauld, count of Soissons, Anselm II donated to the abbey all the lordship and property on which it had been built, the fief of Follemprise, the Croisettes and Les vignes-Messire-Artus, the lands and lordship of the village of Lucy as well as many other lands. This legacy was confirmed in 1084 during a parliament conducted in Ribemont in the presence of Philip I, King of France. The abbey was endowed with important possessions and privileges, as in 1087, when Anselm, also known as Bouchain, also gave it a sheepfold, which he had received for the benefit of the Count of Flanders Robert the Frisian who had then freed it, transforming it into an alleu. The sheepfold became lordship of Ribemont, extended over an area of 250 measures by the sea, on the parish of Loon, future municipality of Loon-Plage, in Maritime Flanders, current district of Dunkirk. The sheepfold then passed from the abbey to the chapter Notre-Dame de Thérouanne.
