Lugdunum Convenarum, literally "hill of the god Lug of the Convenae," is the name commonly given today to an important ancient Aquitano-Roman urban city in the southwest of Roman Gaul, corresponding to the current village of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges. In 72 BC, Pompey returned from Spain to help Metellus fight another former Roman general, Sertorius, a traitor who wanted to gain independence. Sertorius was assassinated by one of his lieutenants, M. Perperna Vento. To stabilize his now useless troops, Pompey is said to have founded a fort at Lugdunum Convenarum on this natural oppidum. The city was to become a center of Romanization for the entire region and help to settle the Aquitano-Roman populations there.
